MEMBERSHIP

Thank you to all those who have sent the £3 for postage and copying of the Newsletter. I am now compiling a list of e-mail addresses to make distribution quicker and easier. If you have one you have not already sent me please e-mail me on the address at the end of the Newsletter.

AGM

Val Marks reported on progress with the Stephanie Marks Appeal. The second launch was last week in London with the attendance of Ian Botham. Although any monies which can be raised locally will still be invaluable the emphasis now is on trying to raise 2 million pounds from business. We are mostly dependant on local firms because national firms invest in national projects. If you have any thoughts about who might be approached do please let Val know. Although working plans are now well advanced no development of the site can take place until we have £1,000,000 to finance the first stages. If things go well the centre should open in 2008.

You art invited to attend the next major event; a three course barbecue with hog roast and music at the Warren Lodge Hotel, Shepperton on Friday, July 8th at 7.30 pm. Vegetarian options available. Tickets £25. Fred and I really enjoyed the Oriental Evening when there was a profit of some £1,800 so these events really do help the cause.

Any small local events you can organise would also be a great help both in raising funds and spreading the word. Do have a think about what you could do.

Jill Steaton, who is the new Diabetes UK Regional Manager, told us about her role. She has an enormous area to cover and a heavy task in trying to ensure the implementation of the National Service Framework, but she is always happy to hear from members by letter or e-mail. She stressed the need for all with Diabetes to become members of DUK since a large membership carries more weight when tackling government.

A Diabetes Roadshow will visit Guildford High Street on Friday, October 14th . The Trailer will be manned by professionals but volunteers are invited to welcome the public in and also distribute balloons and flyers around the town. If you can help for an hour or two please let Avril or me know. Travel and parking expenses will be paid.

DIABETES TESTING DAY

This will be as usual on the first Saturday of Diabetes week, 12th June, outside Sainsbury in Woking. Terry, who is currently in Woking Hospice, is not well enough to organise it this year but Woking Lions are still in command with Avril’s help. Any member who can give a little time on the day to help the nurses by getting forms filled in etc, please contact Avril. Even half an hour’s help would be invaluable

Val Green is doing the DUK walk in Farnham during Diabetes Week and would appreciate some sponsorship. I can pass on any pledges.

NEW COMMITTEE

We are pleased to welcome Barbara Brown, Sheila Nolan and Val Green to the team since our ranks have been much diminished by Terry’s illness. Sue Tyler is also unwell. We send them both our love and good wishes. If anyone else can join us for 5 meetings a year, especially a male or someone with good computer skills, the help would be invaluable. If you can help please contact Pam.

ELECTION

As requested by Diabetes UK I wrote to all 12 Parliamentary candidates in our area seeking their support for good policies for those with Diabetes. Four replied!

DIABETES WELLNESS WEEKEND

The charity Diabetes Wellness are offering a free two day course on June4th and 5th 2005 to be held at East Horsley Management Centre – a very pleasant venue. Booking dates have closed but there are one or two places left if we notify them quickly. Sheila Nolan and I are going. The aim is to improve Diabetes management and a wide variety of professionals will be there. If you would like to attend please let me know as soon as possible.

SUMMER SOCIAL EVENING

Pat and Nick Nicholls have generously offered us hospitality on Thursday, August 4th at Shortwood, Wellington Avenue, Virginia Water. They will provide a main course and sell wine and soft drinks but we are invited to contribute desserts. There will be a Bring and Buy stall and profits will be shared among charities including the Stephanie Marks Appeal. They have a marquee so weather should not create a problem. Do come and bring a partner. We will have a chance to talk to each other and enjoy a good meal. Please return the slip below by July 14th. I can supply a map if you wish. Parking can be in Crown Road.

SUMMER SOCIAL EVENING

I/we will attend the evening and bring a gift for the Bring and Buy and a dessert to serve – people.
