WEB SITE
We have joined Runnymede Association of Voluntary Services. A contact of theirs has very kindly put our site onto the web for us so we now have an address: www. stpeters-diabetes.org.uk. This should be accessible directly or through RAVS or through Diabetes UK. We are grateful to Dorothy Cook who gave us a contact and paid for the building of the site. The host webmaster will update it for us.
STEPHANIE MARKS APPEAL
An Oriental evening is planned at the Anchor, Church Square Shepperton, on Friday, April 22nd. Tickets are £25 each and include food and entertainment. So far around £200,000 has been raised for the part of the appeal allocated to the public so we need another £300.000 to enable us to go to businesses for major sponsorship. Fred and I will be going and would love some of you to join us. If you would like to come more details can be found on the website www. stephaniemarks, org.uk or you can ring me. In any case we would like to know if you plan to attend so that we can organise seating.
If you have any other ideas for fundraising Val Marks would be delighted to hear from you. Two of our neighbours have died recently having, like me, been resident since the houses were built. Instead of sendi8ng flowers we have donated to the appeal. There are so many ways in which you can help. The Mayor of Elmbridge supported the charity in his year of office and we hope proceeds from that will reach £30,000.
MEDICALERT
Despite a last minute change of speaker we had a good meeting and learned a great deal about the way their system works. An emblem which carries your membership number and the telephone number of the charity organisation can be put onto a bracelet or necklet, prices varying according to the style and materials you choose. In any kind of emergency your medication and medical details can be accessed but only by a hospital or through ambulance control. This means that you can avoid clashes of medication and also given appropriate emergency treatment. The service is open to anyone with a chronic disease whether on medication or not. After the initial joining fee your records are updated once a year, or more often in required, for a further small fee. There are three firms offering a service in this country but only Medicalert is a charity. Membership is world wide. Members who were at the meeting will have been able to take a leaflet but if you were not there and are interested you will find an ad. In Balance or you can ring me for details.
FINANCES
Terry is unwell at the moment and undergoing tests but we hope to have more news of him soon. We may not have detailed accounts for the AGM, but we will be able to give an idea of the state of our finances. At the request of the Paedatric Diabetes Nurse the committee did agree to sponsor a child who is having problems adjusting to treatment so that he can attend a DUK course for young people.
