NEWSLETTER  October  2003

                             SOCIAL EVENING

Details have now been finalised. We have a chef, Darren, who is prepared to talk to us about what he is cooking and prepare us a meal.  The menu has been agreed with Avril.

Since he has to employ staff to help the cost will be £10 a head of which £5 will be paid from funds.  There will be a bar open at which you can purchase drinks.  The venue will be Woking Football Club which is in Westfield Avenue, opposite the entrance to Woking Park. The evening will start at 7.00pm with dinner being served at approx. 8.00pm.  Darren is a friend of Jamie Oliver who has given us a signed cook book to raffle.  Additional prizes would be welcome.  We need to give Darren good notice of numbers and space is limited to 50.  If you wish to attend please let me have your cheque for £5 a head, payable to St. Peter’s and District Branch, Diabetes UK by October 13th.

                             COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES

Avril has given a session to Practice Nurses on Living with Diabetes.  The practice nurses are taking on more and more responsibility for the care of those with Diabetes so it was helpful for them to know what it is like to cope with it day by day.

I am attending a Living Well course.  These are free courses set up by the NHS to enable people with chronic conditions to take charge of their own treatment and get the best out of the services available.  The course is for 6 half day sessions and is led by volunteers who work to a preset brief and who have undergone the course themselves.  The atmosphere is friendly.  Although I researched things pretty well when I was diagnosed 5 years ago and have excellent support from my practice nurse I am still learning new approaches.  If anyone is interested in future courses please give me a ring or e-mail me and I will pass on more details.

                                      PODIATRY

Last months talk on podiatry was well received and contained some useful material.  I am sending out notes with this newsletter to those who have asked for them but if anyone else would like them please send me an SAE.
